Tumor cell proliferation was evaluated in 20 malnourished gastric cancer patients randomized to receive the oral hospital standard diet (control group) or the oral standard hospital diet associated with parenteral nutrition (PN) support (treatment group). Tumor proliferation was assessed before and after nutrition treatment using flow cytometry and the measurement of the uptake of bromodeoxyuridine (BduR) by cells. The mean percentage of tumor cells incorporating BduR was similar in the control and in the treatment groups, as well as the percentage of S-phase cells documented by flow cytometry. The present study suggests that PN does not stimulate tumor proliferation in malnourished patients affected by gastric cancer.

Glutamine has a specific role in very old rats. Long-term intermittent treatment with glutamine began before advanced age maintained gut mass and decreased the up-regulated glutamine synthetase activity in very old rats in the fed state.

Type and route of diet differentially influence molecular events in the gut and lung mucosal immune system. Any enteral feeding maintains lung lymphotoxin β receptor (LTβR) expression, an important control molecule for immune integrity, whereas intestinal expression requires a complex diet. LTβR explains preservation of respiratory tract immunity when intestinal immunity is compromised.

Neonatal bowel resection leads to loss of absorptive and protective surface and may thus cause malabsorption of dietary nutrients. We quantified intestinal adaptation at the net dietary protein absorptive level. This study demonstrated that the dietary protein absorption capacity of the small intestine is intact after neonatal intestinal surgery.

Causes of parenteral nutrition-associated cholestasis continue to be elusive. Protein to nonprotein calorie ratio was an etiology in the development of cholestasis in premature infants weighing 600–1000 g.

This study is focused on evaluation of the influence of fiber-enriched enteral nutrition on postprandial glycemia using glycemic indices. We did not prove that addition of fiber into enteral nutrition affects postprandial glycemia.

Postoperative hepatic insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) production may be severely disturbed in patients with liver cirrhosis, and the impaired IGF-1 production contributes to the suppressed postoperative protein metabolism in liver cirrhosis. Recombinant human growth hormone (rhGH) + parenteral nutrition can ameliorate changes in the growth hormone/IGF-1 axis after hepatectomy for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in the setting of liver cirrhosis. Short-term use of rhGH in HCC patients with cirrhosis after operation may be safe.

PN is indicated in patients with a dysfunctional gastrointestinal tract, but its role in the survival of patients with advanced cancer is still controversial. The present study shows that PN can obtain a longer survival period for the patients with gastrointestinal obstruction caused by advanced cancer.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) may be required for long-term feeding of patients having persistently depressed neurological status or severe lower cranial nerve palsies in the neurosurgical intensive care units. The purpose of the present study is to report our experience with PEG in these patients.

SenseWear Armband is a new wearable device for measuring energy expenditures. Although it was previously validated only on healthy subjects, its use preliminarily appears promising also for the cancer patient, providing there is accurate estimation of resting energy expenditures and useful information about total daily energy expenditures.
