In 24 subjects with severe short bowel syndrome, plasma citrulline concentration was positively correlated with the length of residual small intestine. However, serial measures of plasma citrulline or glutamine concentrations were not significantly correlated with concomitant intestinal macronutrient or micronutrient absorption and did not predict parenteral nutrition dependency during a 24-week follow-up.
Gordon S. Sacks, Jose E. Aguilar-Nascimento, and Kenneth A. Kudsk

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2007 31: 8-11. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
Well-nourished patients undergoing their first simultaneous pancreas-kidney transplantation who develop postoperative ileus usually do not need specialized nutrition support.
Metin Senkal, Bruno Geier, Martin Hannemann, Thomas Deska, Jakob Linseisen, Günther Wolfram, and Michael Adolph

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2007 31: 12-17. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
{Omega}-3-fatty-acids-supplemented fat emulsions in parenteral nutrition for 5 days after surgery are clinically safe and lead to alteration of the fatty acid profile in serum phospholipids and phospholipids of the erythrocyte membranes.
Yong-Jun Nai, Zhi-Wei Jiang, Zhi-Ming Wang, Ning Li, and Jie-Shou Li

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2007 31: 18-25. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
Compared with untreated tumor-bearing mice, pyrrolidine dithiocarbamate significantly decreased interleukin-6 synthesis through the inhibition of NF{kappa}B activation of the tumors and attenuated the development of cachexia.
Michelle Mignon, Loïc Lêvêque, Emilie Bonnel, and Dominique Meynial-Denis

Glutamine has a specific role in very old rats. The up-regulated glutamine synthetase activity was decreased by an exogenous supply of glutamine only if intramuscular glutamine was depleted by fasting; this was confirmed by studies in the fed state.
Rongjie Yang, Xiaoyu Tan, Ann M. Thomas, Robert Steppacher, Nilofer Qureshi, David C. Morrison, and Charles W. Van Way, III

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2007 31: 32-36. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
The use of alanine-glutamine dipeptide (AGD), a glutamine source administered in resuscitation for hemorrhagic shock, helped restore blood pressure quickly and inhibited mRNA expression for proinflammatory cytokines and inducible nitric oxide synthase.
Dae Y. Lee, Inchul Lee, and Myung G. Lee

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2007 31: 37-46. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
Pharmacokinetic parameters of omeprazole were evaluated in control, cysteine control, protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM), and PCMC rats. Partial restoration of some parameters (such as area under the plasma concentration-time curve, total body clearance, and nonrenal clearance) in PCM rats by oral cysteine supplementation (PCMC rats) to control levels was expected according to restoration of hepatic cytochrome (CYP) 1A2, 2C11, and 3A1/2 in PCMC rats to control levels.
F. Enrique Gomez, Jinggang Lan, Woodae Kang, Chikara Ueno, and Kenneth A. Kudsk

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2007 31: 47-52. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
Short-term (8 hours) parenteral feeding, long-term (5 days) parenteral feeding, and fasting down-regulate murine Peyer’s patch (PP) mucosal addressin cellular adhesion molecule-1 (dCAM-1) gene expression (mA) and protein levels.
Joshua Nething, Karen Ringwald-Smith, Ruth Williams, Michael L. Hancock, and Gregory A. Hale

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2007 31: 53-57. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
This study tests the relationship between body mass index and the malnutrition of pediatric oncology patients by using height for age, weight for age, and height for weight measurements.
Joan Maria Raurich, Jordi Ibáñez, Pere Marsé, María Riera, and Xavier Homar

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2007 31: 58-62. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
Critically ill patients with trauma, medical, and surgical lesions treated with mechanical ventilation have similar levels of metabolic rate when they are matched according to gender, age, and weight.
Wei-Kuo Chang, Stephen A. McClave, Chung-Bao Hsieh, and You-Chen Chao

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2007 31: 63-68. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
Refractometry and the derived mathematical equations may be used to measure formula concentration, gastric residual volume, and formula volume in the stomach. This Brix value measurement may be useful in the evaluation of patients with feeding intolerance by improving the overall accuracy and reliability of interpretation of gastric residual volume.

We report a case of an inpatient undergoing surgery for acute necrotic-hemorrhagic pancreatitis, who presented a Wernicke’s syndrome and thrombocytopenia during parenteral nutrition with industrial 3-compartment bags. All neurologic signs and platelet blood count gradually normalized after IV supplementation of thiamine.
