Suhail Sharif, Michael Broman, Tricia Babcock, Evan Ong, David Jho, Marek Rudnicki, W. Scott Helton, and N. Joseph Espat

{Omega}-3 fatty acid, an anti-inflammatory agent, was used to attenuate both local pancreatic macrophage infiltration and pulmonary leukocyte respiratory burst in acute pancreatitis. As a pilot study, this findings will lay the groundwork for future evaluation of the cellular mechanisms involved and also may guide dietary therapeutic modulation to limit pancreatitis-associated sequelae.
Britt-Marie Iresjö, Ulla Körner, Bo Larsson, Bengt-Åke Henriksson, and Kent Lundholm

This study evaluates whether the amino acid composition in nutrition formulations makes a difference in determination of arterial amino acid concentrations, which are important to promote protein balance in skeletal muscles of ICU patients. The results suggest that available amino acid formulations are not optimized for promotion of protein synthesis in peripheral tissues.

Clinically relevant concentrations of olive oil–based lipid emulsion lacked impact on human neutrophil functions in vitro, including inflammatory cytokines and CD11b expression and apoptosis, and on rat leukocyte migration and P-selectin expression in vivo, compared to that produced by commonly used lipid emulsions based on soybean oil.

Crocetin, a constituent of saffron, was administered in resuscitation after hemorrhagic shock in the rat model. It inhibited expression of mA for proinflammatory cytokines and inducible nitric oxide synthase in the rat model.

It was shown that specialized preoperative nutrition administered before intestinal ischemia reperfusion, performed in rats, attenuates the subsequent ischemia-reperfusion–related injury in kidney and intestine.

Population reference values for bioelectrical impedance phase angle stratified by gender, age, and body mass index are generated in a large German database. These reference values were applied to 3 groups of patients and are also compared to previously published data bases from the United States and Switzerland.

Choline deficiency is associated with catheter thrombosis in home parenteral nutrition patients.

Rates of overhydration were high before tube feeding in both elderly and nonelderly stroke patients. This overhydration rate became more prevalent after iso-osmolal tube feeding in the elderly but decreased rather in the nonelderly subjects. Serum Na+ and K+ concentrations were no different in elderly and nonelderly after tube feeding.

It has long been theorized that in hypermetabolic patients, amino acids released by muscle protein catabolism are consumed by the wound. This study confirms this assumption by quantifying in vivo the integrated response of muscle, wound, and skin protein/amino acid metabolism in severe burn patients.

Important differences exist between prescribed and delivered volumes of enteral nutrition in intensive care. This laboratory study suggests that this might be caused, at least partially, by function and construction of frequently used feeding pump systems. This finding is independent of viscosity of nutrition formulas and feeding-tube resistances.

Hyperglycemia has been demonstrated to cause untoward effects in hospitalized patients. This paper examines the impact of centrally administered parenteral nutrition on the temporality, incidence and dose response of hyperglycemia using several blood glucose cut-points in adult bone marrow transplant patients.

New lipid emulsions for parenteral use are presented focusing on nutrition and energy functions and also biochemical, metabolic and immunomodulating effects. The {omega}-3 fatty acids used alone or as components of a new and complex lipid emulsion (soy, MCT, olive and fish oil) have demonstrated anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects.
