In patients with acute pancreatitis, we compared the effect of jejunal enteral nutrition by semi-elemental vs polymeric formula. Semi-elemental nutrition and polymeric nutrition were both very well tolerated. The semi-elemental formula ensures a more favorable clinical course than polymeric formula in terms of length of hospital stay and weight loss.

Variable insulin availability in parenteral nutrition (PN) solutions is an important clinical problem. Here, we report that insulin availability was markedly increased in solutions containing multivitamins/trace elements compared to those without. We conclude that multivitamins/trace elements are a critical determinant of insulin availability in standard PN solutions.

Fifty hemodialysis patients, treated with either 2 g IV carnitine or placebo, were examined to observe the effects of carnitine therapy in hemodialysis patients. After 24 weeks of treatment, results revealed quality-of-life scores were improved, and erythropoietin doses were reduced in hemodialysis patients relative to the placebo.

Percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy (PEG) placement is a commonly performed enteral-access technique. Wound healing after any abdominal-wall injury is a biologic process that is well described in the literature. The position of the external bolster against the abdominal wall after PEG placement may play a role in peri-PEG tube wound healing.

The results from this study show that human leukocyte antigen-DR expression decreased significantly after surgery in patients who were fasted before surgery. Patients who received a carbohydrate-rich beverage did not show this postoperative decrease.

Short-gut rats fed parenteral nutrition (PN) have elevations in distal products of {omega}-3 and {omega}-6 fatty acids in liver phospholipids. Skeletal muscle lipids were unaffected by the presence of a short gut. Feeding fat-free PN also raised long-chain {omega}-3 and {omega}-6 fatty acids in liver only.

Elemental diet did not alter small-intestinal morphology when compared to a polymeric formula. Elemental diet increased rates of mucosal protein synthesis, cell proliferation, and circulating glucagon-like peptide-2 concentrations, but lactase activity was decreased. Elemental diets can be tailored to simultaneously provide nutrition and a trophic stimulus for intestinal growth during bowel rest.

Parenteral nutrition resulted in an atrophy of the exocrine pancreas, but IV glucose had a stimulatory effect on the synthesis of amylase in the pancreas. The stimulatory effect of cholecystokinin on the pancreatic growth was repressed by IV infusion of glucose.

Turmeric or curcumin shows strong antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Preventive and curative effects are observed in animal studies with induced diseases such as arteriosclerosis, cancer, diabetes, as well as in various respiratory, gastrointestinal, and neurodegenerative diseases and ocular opacities.

For some groups of patients, a cost advantage has been reported for enteral nutrition relative to parenteral nutrition, with no detriment to patient outcomes. Generally, there is little high-quality economic evidence to guide clinical practice in different patient groups requiring nutrition support, particularly those treated in the community.
