Mice received continuous IV infusion of normal saline or 10 mg/kg of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) for 5 days. Despite no differences in body weight changes or food intake, gut-associated lymphoid tissue cell numbers and mucosal IgA levels were lower in the 5-FU than the control group.

Fatty liver can be induced by a high-fat diet and may increase the apoptosis of hepatocytes and decrease liver regeneration after partial hepatectomy. A high-fiber diet can reverse fatty liver and reverse the negative effects of fatty liver on apoptosis and liver regeneration.

Socioeconomic risk factors were identified for line sepsis in home parenteral nutrition (PN) patients. A comparison between 2 different home PN programs revealed no differences in line sepsis.

Caregivers rated medical and psychosocial situations to determine which were most frequent and difficult. The psychosocial problems were perceived as a greater concern, more of a burden, and causing greater difficulty in coping with everyday life.

Although several authors have found moderate success with more complicated and potentially harmful procedures, we have demonstrated in the first randomized controlled trial comparing 3 commonly used techniques an equivocal success rate using nothing more than consistent practice techniques and experienced clinicians.

Home parenteral nutrition (HPN) is a commonly prescribed therapy. Peripherally inserted central catheters (PICC) are being used more frequently for HPN delivery. A retrospective analysis of PICC versus other central venous access devices for the delivery of HPN revealed an increase in catheter-related infections in the PICC group.

These preliminary data indicate that a computer-based artificial intelligence network may be more accurate for estimating extent of protein catabolism than conventional mathematical modeling in critically ill patients.

The efficacy of an IV graduated calcium gluconate dosing regimen for hypocalcemia was examined in 37 trauma intensive care unit patients. One to 2 g was successful in 79% of patients with mild hypocalcemia (ionized calcium: 1–1.12 mmol/L); 2–4 g was successful for 38% of patients with moderate to severe hypocalcemia.

Due to potential contamination with enteric contents, patients are theoretically at increased risk for meningitis. In this series of 39 patients, we did not find an increased rate of infection for shunted patients after percutaneous endoscopic gastrostomy placement compared to previously published shunt infection rates.

We evaluate the influence of nutrition support in 67 consecutive bariatric surgery patients. Postoperative and 30 days postsurgery nutrition status was similar with or without parenteral nutrition; postsurgery hospital stay significantly decreased in the latter without greater complications. Parenteral nutrition seems unnecessary in bariatric surgery unless there are other complications.

Infusion of PN can rarely be associated with allergic reactions including urticaria. In this case we illustrate a patient who developed urticaria during infusion of PN containing a multivitamin preparation.
