Original Communications:Back

Manju D. Chandrasegaram, Lindsay D. Plank, and John A. Windsor

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2005 29: 65-73. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
Measurements using neutron activation analysis and tritium dilution before and after a 2-week course of parenteral nutrition show that body composition is preserved. In those patients without intercurrent sepsis or recent surgery, body protein status is significantly improved.
Shannon L. Mackenzie, David A. Zygun, Bev L. Whitmore, Christopher J. Doig, and Syed Morad Hameed

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2005 29: 74-80. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
The percentage of patients who received at least 80% of their estimated energy requirements during their intensive care unit stay increased from 20% prior to implementation of an evidence-based nutrition support protocol to 60% after its implementation (p < .001). Inappropriate PN usage was also reduced after implementation of the algorithm (p = .02).
Hui-Chen Lo, Lon-Yen Tsao, Wen-Yin Hsu, Chiu-Yen Chi, and Fu-Ann Tsai

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2005 29: 87-92. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
Clinical observations indicate that serum concentrations of conventional nutrition-related proteins are inconsistent with the growth response in preterm neonates. In this study, we demonstrate that increases in serum concentrations of insulin-like growth factors significantly contribute to weight gain in early postnatal life in preterm neonates.
James D. Paauw, Sandra Bierling, Curtis R. Cook, and Alan T. Davis

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2005 29: 93-96. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
Babies born to women who have hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) are more likely to experience an increased length of hospital stay. Infants born to HG mothers are also more likely to have a decreased gestational age.

Intraperitoneal administration of a blocking antibody to glucagon-like peptide 2 (GLP-2) significantly blunted mucosal hypertrophy and epithelial proliferation in the rat ileum after intestinal resection. This study suggests that GLP-2 is in part responsible for the adaptive response typically found after massive small bowel resection.
Kathryn Cormier, Diana Mager, Louise Bannister, Marie Fortin, Helen Richards, Cheryl Jackson, and Paul Pencharz

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2005 29: 102-107. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
Measured energy requirements of children and adolescents with active Crohn’s disease were compared to those predicted using the FAO/WHO/UNU equation. The FAO/WHO/UNU equation is a reliable predictor of energy requirements in the pediatric Crohn’s disease patients.
Mary E. Flesher, Katharine A. Archer, Barbara D. Leslie, Robert A. McCollom, and Grzegorz P. Martinka

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2005 29: 108-117. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
This descriptive retrospective study showed that malnourished patients can be fed early without negative clinical consequences, using a standardized enteral feeding protocol. It also showed the benefit of applying such a protocol to all patients, as current methods for determining "risk" of refeeding syndrome may be inadequate.
Kenneth Chung and Greg Head

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2005 29: 118-124. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
This study evaluates the microbiologic safety and potential cost savings of total nutrition admixture compounding through extending the use of disposable transfer sets in the automated compounders beyond manufacturer’s recommendation.
Yves M. Dupertuis, Sihan Ramseyer, Marc Fathi, and Claude Pichard

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2005 29: 125-130. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
Comparisons between different multilayered parenteral nutrition bags showed that the gas permeability of the bag wall material is the main limiting factor for ascorbic acid stability. Near to complete prevention of ascorbic acid oxidation in the parenteral nutrition bags was only possible in a newly developed 6-layered bag.

Meena Garg, Sara Bassilian, Cynthia Bell, Samuel Lee, and W. N. Paul Lee

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2005 29: 81-86. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
The role of de novo lipogenesis (DNL) during breast feeding or parenteral nutrition feeding in preterm infants is unknown. We present this study of hepatic DNL in stable preterm infants using noninvasive isotopic approach by mass isotopomer distribution analysis. Hepatic de novo synthesis of palmitate, stearate, and cholesterol from acetyl CoA was assessed on isocaloric diet with different fat energy intake.

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2005 29: 131-133. [Abstract] [Full Text] [PDF]
This case report presents a case of short bowel syndrome resulting from extensive mucosal infarction leaving most of the small bowel denuded of mucosa, which spontaneously regenerated only 16 months after injury.
