Evaluation Studies:Back

MK Robinson, EB Trujillo, KM Mogensen, J Rounds, K McManus, and DO Jacobs

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2003 27: 389-395. [Abstract] [PDF]
Few studies have evaluated the relative effectiveness of nutrition screening tools. This study indicates that prealbumin (PAB) identifies more malnourished patients more quickly than a screening questionnaire and that PAB is a significant predictor of nutritional assessment by a registered dietitian, whereas retinol binding protein and albumin are not.
M Hammami, WW Koo, and EM Hockman

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2003 27: 423-426. [Abstract] [PDF]
This is the first report on body composition of human neonates measured by fan beam dual energy absorptiometry. Body weight (vs length, race, and gender) is the dominant physiologic predictor of body composition. There is also an independent gender effect, with male neonates having higher lean mass and lower fat mass.

PE Wischmeyer, D Jayakar, U Williams, KD Singleton, J Riehm, EA Bacha, V Jeevanandam, U Christians, and N Serkova

A single dose of glutamine 18 hours before myocardial ischemia/reperfusion (I/R) injury in the rat improved post-I/R myocardial tissue adenosine triphosphate and glutathione and decreased tissue lactate. Post-I/R myocardial function was improved by glutamine. Glutamine’s preservation of myocardial function post-I/R may be due to improved myocardial tissue metabolism and glutathione content.
VK Todorova, SA Harms, S Luo, Y Kaufmann, KB Babb, and VS Klimberg

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2003 27: 404-410. [Abstract] [PDF]
Dietary glutamine (AES-14) stimulates apoptosis in experimental 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene-induced mammary carcinoma of rats.
Y Kaufmann, J Kornbluth, Z Feng, M Fahr, RF Schaefer, and VS Klimberg

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2003 27: 411-418. [Abstract] [PDF]
The prolonged glutamine supplementation significantly reduced DMBA-induced breast cancer growth which was associated with enhanced blood glutathione concentration, gut glutathione release and natural killer cell activity indicating a possible mechanism of action through enhanced glutathione metabolism.
LJ Hoffer, K Sher, F Saboohi, P Bernier, EM MacNamara, and D Rinzler

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2003 27: 419-422. [Abstract] [PDF]
Some parenteral amino acid products use N-acetyl-L-tyrosine (NAT) instead of tyrosine. Patients receiving Aminosyn II excreted approximately 35% of infused NAT unchanged in their urine. Despite this loss, sufficient phenylalanine was provided and NAT retained to meet the total aromatic amino acid requirement of persons with normal phenylalanine hydroxylase activity.
JS Scolapio, J DeArment, DL Hurley, M Romano, D Harnois, and SD Weigand

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2003 27: 427-432. [Abstract] [PDF]
This is a retrospective study of the effect of tacrolimus and short-duration prednisone administration on bone mineral density in 49 patients receiving orthotopic liver transplantation. Bone density was measured at the spine and hip and reported at baseline and 4 and 12 months after liver transplant.

Jonathan Rhoads Symposium Papers:Back

DF Driscoll

(SAGE) JPEN J Parenter Enteral Nutr 2003 27: 433-438. [Abstract] [PDF]
The compounding of TPN admixtures is a complicated task given the requirements for strict aseptic technique and the multitude of components that are extemporaneously added to make the final formulation. Stability, compatibility and sterility issues are of greatest concern to pharmacists during the preparation of these highly complex dosage forms. A full knowledge of these issues and pharmacy specialization in this area are the necessary prerequisites in order to safely provide TPN therapy.
